Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Preparation: HBOT Pre-Treatment Guidelines

Updated: Aug 10

HBOT Pre-Treatment Guidelines

For a successful Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) session, our healthcare professionals guarantee some pre- and post-treatment care protocols. There are two types of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy preparation: one that a patient should follow on their own and the other category is the protocols that the doctor takes care of.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a curative treatment that involves using pure oxygen. The main tool of HBOT is a pressurized chamber that helps the body heal effectively. Although it's a painless procedure, it can become unbearable if proper HBOT preparation isn’t done.

This guide is created to keep our patients informed about all the pre-and post-treatment care protocols they should know for their HBOT session.

Avoid certain substances

Refrain from consuming alcohol, caffeine, or carbonated beverages prior to your treatment. Also, avoid using products that contain petroleum, such as skin care products, lotions, and deodorant.

Remove items

It’s necessary for all the patients to remove all personal items, including jewellery, makeup, oils, creams, dentures, and hearing devices.

Leave electronic devices, reading material, books, newspapers, CD players, cell phones, crayons, lighters, matches, and paper products outside the chamber. This will help guarantee a safe and successful experience.

Wear Clean Clothing

Come up with fresh and clean attire for your appointment by wearing either a hospital gown, medical scrubs, or all-cotton clothing that is freshly laundered. Present yourself as if you've just stepped out of the shower, feeling all clean.

Bring your essentials

Bring your Essentials

At Lakeshore Hyperbaric Centers, there’s no such “bring your essentials” list. To provide our patients with all the care, we offer water and blankets for their comfort. We also provide a special band to prevent static electricity buildup.

Keep your body healthy

Try to keep your body healthy for a couple of weeks before your treatment. You should also avoid tobacco and certain medications. Make sure all dental work is complete, including any root canals or temporary caps.

Check implanted devices

If you have implanted devices such as a pacemaker, it is important to make sure they can endure any pressure they may encounter. In ideal cases, the healthcare provider reaches out to the manufacturer of the device to obtain additional information.

Post-HBOT Care Instructions

Treating your body with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy technically means surrounding your body with 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

It helps in triggering the natural repair mechanisms of your body. So in this scenario, it's common to feel exhausted. To cope with this, consider the following techniques:

Keep your Body Relaxed

After the HBOT session, keeping your body calm and relaxed should be your priority. The best way to guarantee that is to give yourself enough time to relax and rejuvenate. Also, take care of your sleeping patterns. Aim for a minimum of 7-8 hours each night.

Don’t engage your body in heavy workouts where you have to push yourself too hard. Take brief naps during the day if necessary.

Stay Hydrated

Maintaining proper hydration is essential for the overall of your body. Consuming a sufficient quantity of water each day can reduce tiredness. It also greatly aids in the elimination of any toxins that are expelled during treatment.

Eating habits

Nutritious Eating Habits

Keep an eye on what you are eating. Have a planned and balanced meal. It should include right proportions of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Foods that are rich in nutrients can provide your body the energy it needs to beat tiredness efficiently.

Stretching to have healthy blood flow

Low-Impact Exercises

Participate in gentle physical activities like walking or stretching to have healthy blood flow and no exhaustion complaints. Be sure to seek guidance from your medical professional prior to launching a new fitness routine.

Manage your Stress and Anxiety

Discover some relaxing activities, such as deep breaths, meditation, yoga or engage yourself in activities that bring you joy. These little steps can benefit you more than you think. Visible results like improved sleep quality and a relaxed mind can be noticed even after one or two times.

Support System

Consider reaching out to loved ones, social networks, or peer groups to share your HBOT experience. Building connections with individuals who have gone through similar experiences or are currently facing similar challenges can offer emotional comfort and practical insights.

Final Words

By following these pre- and post-HBOT care guidelines, you can heighten your Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy experience and promote a smoother recovery. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and instructions tailored to your specific needs.
